Ross Halfin: The So What! Interview

He needs no introduction, but despite that, I’m going to offer one anyway…Ross Halfin. The man, not a myth but most certainly a legend in the field of photography. A powerhouse behind the lens since the late ’70s, Ross has photographed anyone and everyone you care to think of. The Who? Check. Led Zeppelin? Check. The Sex Pistols? Check. Paul McCartney? Check. Ozzy? Check. Iron Maiden? Check. And Metallica? Well, that’s a big check because, since the mid-‘80s, Ross has been capturing the band on and offstage worldwide like no other. He has also enjoyed adventures in travel photography, and in 2011 released Sojourner, which shows some of Ross’ excellent scenescapes from around the world.

When The Black Album was being made, Ross was there. And when it was being toured, Ross was, again, there. Thus the brand new photography book Metallica: The Black Album in Black & White exists. A selection of photographs from the era, it is an engaging and positive look back at this enormous period of the band’s history, so it was only appropriate that I got him on Zoom to have a chat about it. Trust me, they donot make ’em like Ross anymore.
