Kirk Hammett is no stranger to horror. The Metallica guitarist has been fascinated by the film genre since he was a young child, and over the years has amassed one of the world's most extensive collections of horror-movie memorabilia and posters. He's showcased select pieces at festivals, including Metallica's Orion Music + More and his own Fear FestEvil, as well as in his 2012 book, Too Much Horror Business. But the crowning jewel came this fall when he received his first gallery showing at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. We met up with Hammett at the premiere of It's Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art From the Kirk Hammett Collection to get a first look at the impressive exhibit, before escorting him to the Salem Witch Museum where he received a history lesson on the real-life horror that went down in that town over three hundred years ago.
Ladies and gentleman, the Ripper has entered the building.
Kirk Hammett, best known for his screaming lead guitar work in heavy metal band Metallica, arrived in Salem Friday night, a week removed from the opening of an exhibition showing his horror movie memorabilia collection at Peabody Essex Museum.
The exhibition is titled "It's Alive! Classic Horror and Sci-Fi Art from the Kirk Hammett Collection." It presents 135 pieces of Hammett's life-long collection of horror movie posters, props, costume parts and more, according to Lynda Hartigan, deputy director of the museum. The collection runs through Sunday, Nov. 26.
The worlds of horror films, science fiction and heavy metal have always shared a set of thematic and aesthetic similarities -- blood, space, screams, monsters. Countless heavy bands from Slayer to System of a Down have been influenced by the books of William Gibson, Wes Craven, Clive Barker and Dario Argento, and schlock metal icon Rob Zombie has even directed several horror movies himself, including a remake of the classic "Halloween."
When family obligations sidelined Korn bassist Fieldy from the nu-metal group's South American tour last year, the band welcomed an unusual pinch hitter: Tye Trujillo, the 12-year-old son of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. The tween accompanied the band on seven dates this past April, and the band's official videographer, Sébastien Paquet, created a 15-minute film, Korn and the Prodigy Son, about the experience, premiering at Rolling Stone.
Lars recently hosted an episode of Sommar & Vinter i P1 for Sveriges Radio in Sweden. He spoke about life, work, and the music that got him on the right track in life.
James makes a rare guest appearance on the title track of Heart's upcoming album, Beautiful Broken. The short, hard-rocking song originally came out as a bonus track on the group's 2012 LP Fanatic. The new version finds singer Ann Wilson trading verses about a hot mess of a woman amid jagged riffs with James, who provides harmonies and the occasional breakout.

The critically-acclaimed independent movie Radio Dreams - featuring a Metallica-themed storyline with an appearance from our very own Lars Ulrich - continues its successful North American festival run in the coming weeks with screenings in Seattle and New York. Centered around the quest of Kabul Dreams - a rock band from Afghanistan - to meet their heroes Metallica, and the San Francisco-based Iranian radio station committed to helping them do so, Radio Dreams investigates musical passion and the importance of community support among several of the deeply moving sentiments it expresses. We don’t want to say much more than that - a film, after all, should be yours to enjoy on your own terms - needless to say that Lars was honored to have been invited to participate and is absolutely smitten with the final movie. Directed with love and passion by die-hard Metallica fan Babak…
