It's been well documented that Metallica were pretty shocked when Jethro Tull won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance in 1989 instead of them. The other nominees in 1989 for that category were AC/DC, Iggy Pop and Jane's Addiction. But many thought Metallica deserved the award for the album ...And Justice For All. Instead, Jethro Tull received it for Crest of a Knave — an album that wouldn't even be on the radar if you asked a Tull fan for their Top 5 albums from the band. It seems obvious that the award was given as a Lifetime Achievement award rather than a "Performance" award. Unfortunately, Metallica lost out in this industry gesture.
