The Halfin Files

As we prepare to wave the boys off on a venture across North America, we thought it might be nice to dip into our 2017 Ross Halfin photo stash and choose a few you haven’t seen.

There is no-one like him, both on and off the pitch, and whatever the weather you can always rely on Ross to get the job done, and done extremely well. Together with long-time assistant Kaz Horie, Ross continues to make sure that the vast majority of landmark events in Metallica’s history get documented. Enjoy.

Ross Halfin

Mexico City - There’s nothing like a good, strong cup of tea to move things along. Bag in first, then boiling hot water and leave to steep. IF you use milk, this goes in LAST. If you ever receive a cup of tea where the milk went in first, turn it down immediately!

Ross Halfin

Mexico City - Well…I started to caption this and …errr….I just couldn’t do it. (I have to remember that many don’t share my sense of humor)…but hey! Maybe you can share YOURS?!

Ross Halfin

Mexico City - Two sides of what Ross continues to do so well. First, he makes sure to get THE group shoot that everyone wanted from these shows. And the second portrait of Lars screaming is such a CLASSIC and TIMELESS bit of Halfin’s live work that it deserves prominent placement for future games.

Mexico City - Kirk and his lucky tour mascot, Esmerelda the Evil One, who travels with him whenever her schedule allows (some of this might be fake news)… Ross told me that this was taken at La Isla de las Muñecas, and that you are not meant to take photos there or else folks can get quite chippy. As they did with Ross and Kirk once they realized what the hell the pair of them were doing!

Ross Halfin

Mexico City - Two great guitarists sharing a funny moment during the Foro Sol rehearsals.

Ross Halfin

Mexico City - James illustrating a unique way in which he holds a single drumstick. Any resemblance to a well-known gesture is purely coincidental!

Ross Halfin

CPH - Genuinely cannot remember when this was, but I believe it was Night 1, James soldiering through and giving it some of his best “goofy grin” as he did.

Ross Halfin

CPH - Just a classic Het shot. Losing himself in the moment. Second show.

Ross Halfin

CPH - RT about to go “full medieval crawl” on the Danes.

Ross Halfin

CPH - I love shots like this as they offer a “Gursky-like” look at the venue (Gursky is one helluva photographer too - go look him up!) and Ross always manages to capture several of these. Great eye-candy. Open up and go for a wander...

Be grateful there is no embedded audio.

Seoul, South Korea - I mean, it’s a YARD FILLED WITH HEAVY METAL!

Ross Halfin

Simply a great photograph.

Ross Halfin

I love to see the band as close together in live action as possible, thus a great shot for the unity vibe.

Shanghai, China - What a load of bull!

CPH rehearsals - “ooo eeee oo…"
