GQ: Metallica is the new Kate Bush: How Stranger Things catapulted "Master of Puppets" into the charts
Stranger Things needle drops just hit different. You've got to hand it to music supervisor Nora Felder. Not once but twice this season has she recontextualised an 80s classic and turned it into an unlikely 2022 hit. First, there was Kate Bush's “Running Up That Hill”, which, deployed skillfully in the first part of the season in late May, worked its way up the charts to the UK number one spot in late June, a staggering 37 years after its release. And now, she's made Metallica's “Master of Puppets” one of the most-played songs in both the UK and the US after dropping it into the show's epic two+ hour finale. As of Monday morning, the 36 year old song stands at 35 on Spotify's top 50 in the UK, and 21 in the US.
