Sep 15, 2017Fifth Member Reports: Lyon Edition
After two awesome shows in Paris, Metallica were back in Lyon after seven years! Yes seven years since Lyon Magnetic Tour May 23, 2010… the wait was long.
After three hours of driving with my best friend and his girlfriend, and two mega shows in Paris, there I was in Lyon! Where I was born!! During the drive, I was organizing the day with the other members of the chapter.
This was the 2nd show in the capital, Paris. Like on the 8th, I'm in the “Unforgiven Experience” [one of the CID packages – ED], but the wait seems longer, there are more people, and we are already hot thanks to Friday's super concert. After recovering my package goodies (poster, cap) I was at the barriers, side “Kirk,” and before “It’s A Long Way To The Top" sounded in the AccorHotels Arena, the delirious crowd made the “ola” chant. With the mythical AC/DC following, the audience was boiling. Then like a cannonball, “Hardwired” resonated and the tone was set! The crowd was boosted! Much more than for the Met In Paris 1! Behind me, the pogos began, and the fans “flew above our heads.” The songs followed each other leaving us no respite. It was hot, very hot! I finally discovered “Now That We're Dead” live and the pleasure of seeing all Metallica playing drums (electronic drums). And their great surprise, for the first time live, “ManUNkind" OH! A real revelation!
Sep 8, 2017Fifth Member Reports: Amsterdam Edition
My journey to see Metallica for a second night at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam was both a short one and a long one. A mere 5 kilometers from my home, a leisurely 20-minute bicycle ride, but a 20-year trip through life, love, and loss since I had last seen the band that has been part of my life since the Damaged Justice tour in 1989 when I was 13.
Sep 4, 2017‘DAM BUSTERS!
Oh man, tonight Metallica simply exploded onto the Ziggo Dome stage, to the extent that their eyebrow scorching energy caught some of the manic Amsterdamics off-guard. Yeah. It was like that. One of those gigs where you wondered how the energy could sustain, where you pondered exactly how they proposed to get FURTHER along the wired-train in terms of kinetic human electricity. The placement of “Seek…” in the third slot once again proved a triple caffeinated chaser with a jolt of extra “chase” and the collective roar as “Through The Never” pummeled into every sold-out ear was something to feel. Fan treasures like “The Day That Never Comes” even seemed to take on a new edge of extra-heavy. Yes. The energy was roaring almost out of control, harnessed by only the thinnest of threads…
Aug 24, 2017OBEY YOUR (MIX) MASTER!
He is a world champion turntablist, Grammy-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted DJ, a renowned producer, and the premier mixologist in contemporary music. Mix Master Mike is also a man whose rhythm and flow dovetailed supremely with Metallica on the WorldWired North American Tour. Steffan Chirazi meets another Bay Area legend.
Aug 15, 2017Fifth Member Reports: Vancouver Edition
Myself (Marilyn), my son (Sandy), and my mom (Terry) battled the smoke filled highways and detours from forest fires as we made our way from Northern BC to see Metallica in Vancouver! We started the day getting to the venue, finding parking and checking out what was there so far. Me and Sandy went to the Shark Club to meet up with other members of Nothing Else in BC Matters.
Aug 13, 2017IN WITH THE NEW! OUTSIDE LANDS BRINGS NEW FRIENDS!
Kirk Hammett is a busy man these days. Aside from the WorldWired tour, Hammett is also putting the final pieces in place for his Peabody Museum show this fall, yet he has rarely been in a better place as a musical force. To these eyes, Hammett is as in love with his guitar as he’s ever been; indeed your humble So What! Ed nearly got a headstock in the eye a few times as Kirk strummed away in the seat next to me en route to the venue in Montreal, resolutely determined to keep playing as we spoke. With his fingers engaged in a serious six-string conversation, I engaged Kirk to do some conventional yakking about the tour, his guitar relationship these days, and some fanboying in Canada.
Aug 10, 2017FIFTH MEMBER REPORTS: SEATTLE EDITION
“My favorite part is when the fire shoots out!”
This was my 3-year-old son’s answer to the question of what was his favorite part of the concert. You see, while this was my 19th and my wife’s 12th time seeing ‘Tallica live, this was Murphy’s first time. It’s been a long wait for him as we bought the tickets in February, gave them to him for his birthday in July, and have talked about it many times since.
Aug 7, 2017PETCO PARK PUMMELED!
Great stadium, sold-out and with the distinct air of early ’90s insanity and intensity would be the best way to describe the San Diego vibe. It felt old-school. Beautiful weather + energized band + some frosted mullets ‘n’ moshers spread liberally around Petco Park. Things were fierce. Intense. Fiery.
Aug 5, 2017Fifth Member Reports: Phoenix Edition
Whoever said that “Rock is Dead” has obviously never been to a Metallica concert.
62,000+ jam packed the University of Phoenix Stadium to witness the greatest Metal band of all time! I've seen them multiple times dating back to my very first show on the Damaged Justice Tour, but this was my wife’s very first Metallica concert, and they did not disappoint.
Jul 31, 2017The Rose Bowl Gets Rocked!
Jul 21, 2017MONTREAL METAL MILITIA’D!
Having spent the better part of 90 minutes taking what should’ve been a 30 minute journey tops from the airport to the Parc Jean-Drapeau, we entered the backstage to be met by a procession of large and imposing bugs and mosquitos the size of beagle pups (with wings!) but whose bark turned out to be worse than their bite. Or maybe that was because I slathered on some of the bug repellent that Lars was offering to the CID Hardwired Guests. No matter, none of us were eviscerated as we at first thought might happen, and with only 2.5 hours until show time, the band split off into their pre-gig preparations…
