"One" Single Released

"One" is released in the U.S. The b-side features a cover of Diamond Head's "The Prince." Numerous different versions of the single were later released in Europe including live tracks recorded in Dallas as well as a 4-track demo of "One."


January 22, 1989

"One" Music Video Premieres

Metallica's first music video debuts on MTV. The video combines footage of the band performing "One" in a warehouse with footage from the 1972 movie Johnny Got His Gun.


February 22, 1989

Metallica Appears on the Grammys

Metallica performs "One" on the 31st Annual Grammy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA. They are nominated for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental for ...And Justice for All. They famously lose to Jethro Tull's Crest of a Knave.
