It all started with the Fifth Member show at Webster Hall in New York City in September of last year, so this Friday, May 5th the three LP set of that show will be available exclusively online here at Metallica.com as well as in our pop-up stores in select tour cities this summer (more on that soon!).
Kirk Hammett was born on this day in San Francisco, California.

It was one of the worst kept secrets in the touring world and now we’re here to finally make it official... yes, the WorldWired tour will be hitting the road in North America this summer for our first extended tour of the States and Canada since 2009! Whew... it certainly has been way too long and we are beyond excited to be visiting all of our friends in North America. We’re also psyched to announce that after joining us in Minneapolis last year, Avenged Sevenfold and Volbeat have graciously signed on to be the main support acts for the run.
August 8 Update: Photos & Video Added
In what has become one of our favorite hometown traditions, we’re excited to announce that the San Francisco Giants have once again invited us to celebrate a night on the field with them. The annual event will take place on Monday, August 7, 2017 against the World Champs, the Chicago Cubs and yes, you saw that headline right – this year marks number five! As has become custom, the night will kick off with the National Anthem and first pitch, then we’ll be on hand all night to cheer on the orange and black as we take part of some of the between innings festivities.
Refusing to be bound by the sometimes stifling restraints of those metal fans who dismiss creative development, Metallica have always pursued a resolutely progressive path that has yielded some rather unexpected results, with almost every album stirring unrest in their following. Throughout the years, they have been accused of being too classical, too populist, and even too loud. Whatever move they made, Metallica couldn’t win. Fortunately, however, they did not give a flying fuck.

The Onion: Metallica Board Of Directors Debates Whether New Riff Will Have Negative Impact On Shareholder Value
Weighing the pros and cons of the palm-muted low-E-string lick, Metallica’s 12-member board of directors reportedly debated Wednesday whether lead guitarist Kirk Hammett’s newest riff might negatively impact the band’s shareholder value.
James Hetfield has recently completed work on a contribution for the forthcoming Waylon Jennings tribute album, to be released in February of 2003 by RCA Records. The track he chose, titled "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out of Hand," comes from Jennings September 1978 release, I've Always Been Crazy. The process was unique for James as he not only sang, but played all the instruments on the track. The song was produced by Bob Rock at the Metallica HQ in San Francisco.
"The first time I met Waylon was when a college radio station wanted to get the two outlaws together of certain different styles of music," explained James. "They thought it was a good idea if I interview him and I guess Dad helped me out with a few of the questions. It's funny 'cause my Dad wanted me to get a CD signed for him and then Waylon brought some Metallica stuff to get signed for his son. So…

Metallica will be featured on an upcoming European DVD titled "Later…LOUDER." This is a compilation DVD of different artists who have appeared on the BBC2's flagship music show, Later with Jools Holland. Later has been on the air for over to ten years, and is still the most respected and discerning music show on TV. On the "Later…LOUDER" DVD, Jools Holland introduces us to some of the greatest contemporary rockers of the past ten years, from Ash, Hole, Foo Fighters, Garbage, The Hives and The White Stripes to New Order, Primal Scream and Metallica.
"Later…LOUDER" also explores the Later experience further with an exclusive interview with the Foo Fighters never shown on TV, along with seven other interviews with The Hives, Courtney Love, PJ Harvey, New Order, Metallica, Garbage and Henry Rollins. In addition, you can program your 6 favorite tracks to play in a preferred…
As Metallica prepares to enter the studio, you can get an early taste of Hetfield as James performs with Gov't Mule on the track "Drivin' Rain" from an upcoming multi-artist album titled Crank It Up. MCA Records, in a joint venture with NASCAR and Fox Sports, will be releasing the album in North America on May 21, 2002. With cars and driving as the theme, the record features new recordings and remixes not found anywhere else by Buckcherry, Tantric, Fear Factory, Static X, Slipknot, Slayer, Staind, Les Claypool, Rob Zombie, and others.
Kumpelromantik
In February of 2017, we announced the formation of our All Within My Hands foundation, dedicated to assisting and enriching the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band for years, as well as encourage participation from fans and friends. Exactly three weeks ago on July 6, Metallica threw a party for approx 100 lucky contest winners. They were invited to the Metallica HQ in San Francisco. 10 lucky Grand Prize winners spent the afternoon on a bus together with the band as their tour guides.
Would you trust these guys as your tour guides?
Of course we can't forget about Andrew and Elena, that won the bass player audition and got to be members in Metallica for the night! The band then decided to play for another hour, this time with Bob Rock on bass. The setlist included everything from old stuff, covers to the brand new tune Dead Kennedy Rolls (working title).
100 people in the crowd at this gig
"It was so fuckin' cool to be amongst it again, to connect with you motherfuckers again, to share some music, some laughs, some love, some insults and a few beverages", was Lars' comment a few days after the party.
