The Independent: Metallica, Ziggo Dome, gig review: Luminaries of metal still manage to inspire with a magnificent spectacle

It’s been over 35 years since a quartet of young, volatile, New Wave of British Heavy Metal fanatics (NWOBHM for short) played their first ever show supporting denim and leather traditionalists Saxon at the Whiskey A Go-Go in Hollywood. The four youthful, perma-drunk reprobates were paid a mere $16 for that first show and it’s fair to say that the pay cheque is not the only thing to have changed considerably in the intervening years. From modest beginnings, Metallica went on to conquer the world, achieving bona fide status as the quintessential household heavy metal band (their 1991 self-titled fifth album, affectionately known as ‘The Black Album’ has sold over 16.4 million copies at a rate of on average 5,000 units a week in 2016 alone).

Lemmy Mania!

It's certainly no secret that we have always been hugely inspired and influenced by Motorhead and have had the honor of sharing the stage with Lemmy on several occasions. Well now you can catch the spirit of Lemmy and Motorhead in a recently released film, "LEMMY" (full title "LEMMY: 49% Motherfucker, 51% Son of A Bitch"). The film is currently playing at select theaters (visit LemmyMovie.com for locations), and will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital download in the U.S. on February 15.

In addition to interviews with the four of us, the film also has footage of us playing with Lemmy in Nashville when he was kind enough to come hang at our show in 2009... you can see a portion of "Damage Case." The DVD and Blu-ray have more than 4.5 hours of extras, including rehearsals of both "Damage Case" and "Too Late Too Late" and the full performances of both songs at the…

Live at San Quentin

I noticed him standing there, shirtless, back to me, heavily tattooed. He was a skinhead, as in no hair. He wore a huge, immovable grin and black wrap sunglasses. One of the guards told me he was a lifer (in jail for life, no chance of parole). The initials FTW were tattooed onto the nape of neck. Fuck The World. I doubted he was prone to outbursts of immovable grinning, or any displays of happiness come to think of it. Of course this man was excited that Metallica was here, but more than anything I sensed he was enjoying an all-too-rare feeling of being proud. Proud that theyd offered to do a show for the inmates. Proud that theyd donated $10,000 towards the San Quentin Giants baseball field, about 400 ft opposite the makeshift stage in the main exercise yard. But more than anything, I sensed that he was proud theyd volunteered to offer a little bit of relief from an endless…

PLSN: Lighting Metallica Through the Never in 3D IMAX

Metallica is known for making memorable concert moments. It could start out simply as a little pre-planned spark of a lighting fixture that would trigger crashing light towers, destroying the set to a controlled chaos while the bewildered audience sometimes raced for the exits. Variations of these destruction scenes over the years loom large in their legacy. Now theyve poured all these gags in a virtual cement mixer, set the volume to roar and captured it on film 3D IMAX, no less.
