Forbes: Drinking Whiskey With Metallica (Part II: Dave The Distiller)

Dave Pickerell was a legend in the spirits industry, serving as Master Distiller at Maker’s Mark for 14 years, then moving on to launch numerous other whiskies, including Whistlepig, where he was also the Master Distiller. One of his last projects was creating Blackened, a whiskey for the rock group Metallica. Dave and I met to sample one of the first bottles and discuss what went into creating it, as well as his relationship with the band. Sadly, Dave passed away a short time later, in early November, at the age of 62. “As soon as I met him, I felt incredible comfortable and connected to him,” Lars Ulrich, of Metallica, told me in a separate interview, “I still haven’t be able to process that he’s passed.”
