A rather smart idea from...Lars. yes, he was the one who thought it'd be great to give each band member a tape recorder and let them interview Jason alone without the attentions of said-editor (this was for the Jason Newsted special issue). And so they did! And how they came out! Wow! To think, these were the last detailed interviews Jason ever did before leaving Metallica. The plan had been for everyone to undergo the same but, well, stuff started happening after that and...
Another Lars collage just because, well, I like it. the design team did a tremendous job taking the elements we wanted in there and incorporating them into such limited space.

Looking back on this, it might be one of the best things So What! has ever done. Dead of winter 2001, dead of Metallica 2001, two band members who didn't even know if it was a band anymore. The photography for this story was fantastic from Mark Leialoha (who shot over half the material in the book) and the sort-of round-table was, in retrospect, both heavy and a huge beam of informational light for clubbers who had waited a long time for any information.

Nothing fancy here, just a page from the 'Garage Inc' story we initially ran and which I re-edited here. You can get an idea of how we have re-designed every page in the book and tried to vary the photo use too. Mark Abramson and his design team did a fine job reinterpreting my overall creative design concepts and adding dimensions to both it and the design of the book overall which I would never have got close to.

An example of how we have handled the massive task of grabbing sponsor section highlights. Each band member has two blasts within the book, and we decided to 'collage' as many things as we could without making it completely illegible. Thus we see here a hodge-podge of cool Larsian moments and some poignant memories. Bless him. With Kirk, we can see an artist at work, plus some magnificent pictures of the even more magnificent Darla.
