Metallica bass player Robert Trujillo has been working for years on a labor-of-love documentary about the late jazz bass legend, Jaco Pastorius, which will screen at the Mill Valley Film Festival on October 6.

Robert is getting a couple old friends together to bring back the old MASS MENTAL project from the late 90s for two shows. They're playing a warm-up gig at the Whisky a Go-Go on Tuesday, August 26 and will then appear at the Bass Camp during Warwick Open Day 2014 on September 6 in Markneukirchen, Germany.

"You guys like the Beatles?" Metallica frontman James Hetfield asked the audience at a benefit called Acoustic-4-a-Cure. After hearing the crowd's cheers, he deadpanned, "Uh, I've heard of them. This is a beautiful song." Then, in a rare solo appearance featuring the typically fearsome metal frontman armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar, he sang one of the Fab Four's most tender love songs, "In My Life."

The highlight of the concert was Hetfield's set, which was equally poignant and powerful. As the frontman for the world's greatest metal band, Hetfield might seem like an unlikely candidate to go acoustic. Yet, he proved entirely capable and comfortable in the setting, thrilling with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and a cover of the Beatles' "In My Life." He gave us a peak into his personal world, describing how the death of his parents from cancer inspired the touching Metallica number "Until It Sleeps."
