12/9/2009Taking into account a history that includes mainstream monster acts such as the Rolling Stones, Eagles and Neil Diamond, it might seem bizarre to consider Metallica among the biggest shows ever held in a Treasure Valley arena.

That's right, folks, it was a big self-help meeting at the Times Union Center Thursday night, with James Hetfield leading the house in chants about war, lightning, insanity, destruction and such like.
Actually, it was a Metallica concert, but Hetfield was in a surprisingly jovial, motivational mood, especially for a guy singing songs with titles like "Broken, Beat and Scarred," "Nothing Else Matters" and "Sad But True."
Hetfield has reason to be a happy, though. He leads a simply ferocious band, and he and his crew were simply blazing Thursday night - just like the pyro that erupted all around them. |

Well, guess what? It's still there. And it's waiting for you. |

11/9/2009Metallica's new live DVD will be shown on the silver screen this week. 10/14/2009Thrash music is about as subtle as a punch in the mouth - or a dozen punches in two seconds. During the 1980s, however, a pair of now-legendary bands, Husker Du and Metallica, transformed thrash into a thing of beauty without sacrificing any of its blunt force or blitzkrieg speed. The not-so secret ingredient in the success of both bands were guitarists capable of shredding heavy metal melodies into chromatic confetti-shrapnel with quicksilver aplomb. |
10/13/2009Winnipeg metal fans had an extra reason to be thankful Monday.
Thrash pioneers Metallica visited the city yesterday for the first time since 2004, capping off the Thanksgiving long weekend for a pumped-up sold-out crowd of 16,000 at the MTS Centre with a career-spanning set and every arena rock trick in the book.

9/30/2009Two decades removed from its last truly cutting-edge work, 1988's classic ...And Justice for All, Metallica finds itself strangely resting on top of the world while still fighting to stay relevant. Beginning with 1991's Metallica (known as the "Black Album"), the band began to veer wildly from the thrilling thrash-metal style it once played with unparalleled skill. Last year, it returned with the Rick Rubin-produced Death Magnetic, an attempt to re-embrace its trademark, epic song structures. Fans and critics alike hailed the band's return to form, and this fall sees Metallica on a long-awaited arena headlining tour. |

9/18/2009As green and red lasers bounced throughout Conseco Fieldhouse during Metallica's opening song Thursday night, the imagery echoed 1970s sci-fi kitsch that works so well on television's "Lost."
